- DW: Definitely living. That’s a weird question.
- Q: Your new novel, Charlotte Street, is already being called the greatest book the world has ever seen.
- DW: Yes, but only by critics and readers. It’s important to point that out.
- Q: What’s it about?
- DW: It’s about a boy who meets a girl. But only for a second, because she’s got somewhere to be. He helps her in that second, and there’s a moment of deep possibility. But then she’s gone. And he’s disappointed. But when he looks down, he realises he’s still got something of hers in his hands…
- Q: Her tatty disposable camera.
- DW: Yes. And when he develops the film, he realises there’s something very odd indeed about one photograph in particular… something very odd.
- Q: It’s a bit like a story you’d read in one of those free newspapers they give you.
- DW: Oh.

There’s a stock phrase I’m used to hearing on soaps or in bars, if I’m eavesdropping. One person looks at the other and says, all serious like, ‘Things change. People change.’
They’ll accentuate ‘people’ so that we know they’re talking about ‘people’ and then they’ll leave a pause after they’ve said it so you can see just how very serious they are.
I think things do change, of course. But in my experience, I think often things change because people don’t.
